Jubal Flagg of the “Brooke and Jubal Morning Show” at KQMV/Seattle and syndicated across the country is, in my opinion, one of the funniest personalities on the planet. The show leads the market in just about every demo, with women and men.
His success is due to more than being “funny.” There is a different side to him, as well, that drives his success. What has surprised me as I have gotten to know him better is the journey he took to discover his “voice.” He has some GREAT insights to share about what it has taken for him to be successful. These are insights that are useful whether you are a talent on radio or television.
Jubal was the keynote speaker for the recent WJPZ/Syracuse Alumni Association banquet. I had invited him and was a little surprised he accepted the offer to come to Syracuse in the middle of winter (!), but he was eager to share some thoughts and his story with the students and alumni.
His message? Be relentless. And find your voice. It is great advice for us all. Here is a video of his speech (forgive the focusing and refocusing – it wasn’t me!).
One point I illustrated when introducing him to the stage is how much hard work and preparation goes into his show… every… single… day. Anytime I’m at his flagship station, KQMV/Seattle, I see the morning team working well into the afternoon.
They go out with a mic and record content for their features, and they meticulously plan out the next day’s show, doing all of the things we talked about in our Content Superhero series.
This show doesn’t open up the mics and hope everything turns out OK – they prepare and as a result are able to get the most out of their talent.
They do not throw away a tease or stumble into the topic of a break. They carefully craft these elements of the show. They do the little things that mean so much.
Brooke & Jubal’s show is already heard in more than 40 markets and their affiliate list is growing. If your show is not competing against them now, you might be in the future. Is your program as prepared as it should be?
